Overview

Because of San Juan County's geographic location, it boasts an extremely self-reliant population. Island-grown businesses include tourism-related businesses, agriculture, single-family home construction, commercial fishing, forest management, real estate sales and investment. Tourism and real estate investing drives a large segment of the local economy.

As retirees and semi-retirees make up a sizeable percentage of county residents, a significant portion of San Juan County's economy addresses their health, recreation and other needs. Additionally, tourism in San Juan County drives the service sector, providing most of the wage jobs.

Partnerships with educational institutions such as Skagit Valley College San Juan Center branch, or the world-renowned Friday Harbor Labs marine research facility of the University of Washington provide a skilled workforce.

With few exceptions, very small businesses of 1-5 employees drive San Juan County's economy, and the region boasts more business licenses per capita than any other county in the state. San Juan County residents are truly independent and innovative.
