International trade drives Washington's economy. The state remains the fourth largest exporter in the country and has consistently had one of the highest "export per capita" and "exports as a percentage of state GDP" ratios among all states. Washington's vibrant business community, extensive logistics network, and diverse population have provided the state with a solid foundation to take advantage of today's global economy.

The third quarter of 2009 showed mixed signs of recovery for Washington state exports.  The Washington State Department of Commerce Quarterly Trade Bulletin shows that total exports fell 9.9% from the previous quarter, although non-aerospace increased for the second straight quarter. Total exports through September 2009 year-to-date are down 31.1% from September 2008.

China, Canada, and Japan continue to be the largest export markets for Washington goods, but emerging markets in the Middle East and South Asia have also recently become important destinations for Washington products.

Washington state ports brought in more than $87 billion in goods in 2008, making it one of the largest importing states in the nation.
